Why did the Tigers allow the Yankees to steal Granderson for next to nothing?
Phil Coke is average and I’ve said from day one Austin Jackson is very overated. In return the Yankees got one of the best centerfielders in the game.

I’m not trying to be mean but your a Yankee fan. Why are you questioning it? You have a good player. Be happy and count your blessings.
they also got 2 great pitchers from the diamondbacks who are young, granderson is 28 and his deal would run out soon, and the tigers wouldnt be able to afford him…they are trying to get a lot of young talent and hope to build on that
Salary dump
Salary dump.
They have more money to spend elsewhere now.
$$$$$$$$
exactly what i thought when i saw the tigers traded him. they didnt get very much in return for an all-star
Dont get me wrong, I love Grandy, but Jackson will be great. Its a salary dump, n he just k’s way too much!
Detriot = poor
Yankees = 4ever rich.
This is a question that cant be fairly answered right now. As a Tigers fan I am a bit dissappointed they traded Grandy but as a realist they werent getting anywhere with the talent at hand. Things need to change and Grandy was a chip they could deal. Is Coke really average or was he never given a chance to get any consistency? At worse he adresses a huge need for a solid leftie and could fill either a 5th starter role or a power leftie specialist….a vast improvement. Is Austin Jackson a downgrade….I see him as a very similar player at the same age as Granderson was. Will that mean anything down the road? Time will tell but it seems pretty close to apples for apples if (and a big if). But where it gets better for the Tigers is where they got the 2 young pitchers from Arizona. Scherzer is pretty equal to Jackson in terms of stuff and Jackson really faded in August….Max stayed steady. Then the cherry on top is Schlereth….kid is filthy nasty and a power leftie….huge potential as a closer and still very young. So the Tigers get tons of potential for guys who were good but good got the Tigers where? Time to build on that stadium that favors high end pitching with a move that potentially gives them 3 very good pitching options and a guy who could be very similar to Grandy. Did the Yankees get a very good ballplayer…yes they did. Did the Tigers make moves that make financial sense and potentially give them the pitching depth to be a threat? Yes they did. With Verlander and Porcello at the front of the rotation and big power arms like Schlereth to go with Perry and a couple of dynamic kids in the system and Zumaya they might be on to something.
machine head..if this austin jackson can hit the curve ball the yankees got the worst end of the deal.
The yankees let lots of talent go in the past..lew burdette, Vic Power,Jackie Jensen, too name a few
If Melkey becomes a better hitter for the team he is with now..shame on my yankees..Its the luck of the draw..Gardner was not going to win center field …Everything looks good on paper..You have to play the game on the field..
1. The Tigers waste all their money on bad players, like Dontrelle Willis and Jeremy Bonderman.
2. Prospects, prospects, prospects. They need to build for the future.
3. Grandy sure is expensive, at over 8 million a year.
Tigers may have gotten something in return. They have good prospects. They built a team from their own guys in ’06.
Because the Tigers do have $100 million dollars committed for 10 players for this coming up season and they needed to reduce the salary by trading and letting their free agents go to other teams so they can sign top prospects at a lower salary wage contact
The Tigers dumped Granderson’s old market contract and replaced him with two pitchers and a Cf that all cost next to nothing b/c they have entry level contracts… it was win-win b/c the Yankees don’t care about how much money they spend and they can’t allow the Tigers to go out of out of business b/c that would screw the Yankees b/c all the owners would then be demanding more strict rules on money issues.
Granderson’s deal is set at the old days price for OF’s … since the economy is down teams don’t want old deals b/c they are too expensive for right now since they don’t have enough to field a good team and pay them b/c attendance is down and owners are scared that they will be down again this season and they might loose money.
because the Tigers dont care. Just like the Knicks!
